Harry the Dirty Dog, by Gene Zion

Harry was a dog who liked everything except taking a bath.  One day when he heard the water running, he took the scrubby brush and looked around ran out back and hid it in the back yard.  Then he buried it and put dirt over the hole.  Then he ran away from his house.  Then he got dirty.  He played in the dirt where they were fixing the roads.  And he got some more dirty by playing in the smoke from a train.  Then he got hungry.  He ran back home.  When he was home he went under his gate.  He showed the family his tricks, just they said, "That must not be Harry," because he was all dirty.  Then he went and got the scrubby.  And he ran up the stairs and the girl laughed.  Then he hopped in the bath and the little girl said that the dog wanted a bath.  The dad said,"Why don't you give him one?"  So they gave him a bath and then they yelled, "Mommy, Daddy, it's Harry."  He became a white dog with black spots again.  They combed him.  Then after dinner, Harry he went to sleep on his favorite place without knowing the scrubby was under him.  He was a sound sleeper even with the scrubby brush under him.
I liked the tricks Harry did.
